About the Path:

This shared-use path is intended to serve bicyclists, walkers and joggers, rollerblades and strollers in the summer months, and cross-country skiers and snowshoers in the winter.  It would be entirely off-street and free from car traffic.  It would connect the soon-to-be 50+ mile Northern Rail Trail in the north to the eventual Salem-Concord bikeway to the south, to one day form a 110+ mile off street path from the Massachusetts to Vermont border.  The path is to be universally accessible to wheelchairs and compliant to the Americans with Disabilities Act to the extent possible.

It is intended the Path serve both transportation and recreation purposes, connecting villages, providing access to the Merrimack River and adjacent open space, and providing safe and inviting health and fitness opportunities.  The Path will provide spectacular river views as well as access to the River when possible.

The Proposed Merrimack River Greenway Path would diversify Concord's transportation system by adding a green, healthy, non-motorized transportation, and would add a unique transportation resource for residents of the Concord area.

How it came about:
The concept grew from various planning and visioning projects from transportation, recreation, and conservation planning from the past few decades.  The latest vision that was the final push for the concept of the Greenway path came from the City of Concord Bicycle Master Plan.  As part of this plan, a Steering Committee was organized, and a feasibility study for the project was completed.

How it will be completed:
The sheer size and scope of the project means it will be a long term project completed in phases.  In order to receive grant funding for the project, we need to show community support!  Community support can take the form of a large “friends” group (see the 1000 Friends of the MRGT yahoo group or Facebook),  attendance at future events and meetings, and support and donations from local businesses.  The project is still in the earliest of phases so lets keep the momentum going!

How to get involved:
There are a number of things everybody can do to contribute to the cause.  Sign up for the Facebook or Yahoo Group and you will be the first to know about any developments.  Join the Yahoo! group and send an email out to the group if you are interested in joining the Steering Committee in doing some footwork!
