Traffic Skills 101

Spurring Economic Development Through Rail Trails

This meeting will feature a presentation by Craig Della Penna, an experienced realtor and broker who has worked in the real estate industry in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts for several years. Recognized nationally as a leader in the promotion and development of rail trails and greenways, Craig Della Penna’s name is synonymous with the concept of green transportation and sustainable communities. It will explore the recreational and environmental aspects of trails and greenways as well as the public health, economic and transportation benefits associated. Granite State Wheelmen Spring Banquet and Awards

Annual Bike Safety Auction

Need a bike for yourself or children? Don't have a lot to spend? Check out the Annual Bike Safety Auction held by the Concord Police Department and School District. The auction is being held at Green Street Community Center (39 Green Street). Viewing of bikes starts at 5:30pm and the auction starts at 6pm.
1st Annual Swap Meet & Bicycle Flea Market

This is where you can pick up great deals on all types of cycling equipment. Whether you’re a collector, racer or recreational rider, you just might find what you’re looking for here. Next seasons cyclocross bike, or that winter jacket you needed. If you are a vendor, move your old cycling stuff and turn what’s sitting around gathering dust into cash. 2nd Annual Cycle the Seacoast
Sunday, May 1st/Little Harbour School/Portsmouth, NH
This one day ride benefits the American Lung Association. Choose 25, 50 or 100 mile route option. Start and finish line located at Little Harbour School in Portsmouth. $35 registration fee (non-refundable) and $250 fundraising minimum ($125 for ages 7 - 17) required. Third Annual Concord Bicycle Swap
Saturday May 14 (9am-5pm) and Sunday, May 15 (9am-12pm)/S&W Sports/296 S Main St., Concord
The Bicycle Swap is an event fun for families and bicycle riders new and old. CNHBC’s main goal is to get more people on bicycles and to help provide them opportunities to ride safely whether for transportation or recreation. At the Bicycle Swap, people will get the chance to donate their old bikes or drop them off for consignment. Donations are being accepted on May 12-13 (10 a.m. until 7 p.m. both days). If a consigned bike sells at the Swap, the owner will take 75 percent and the CNHBC will keep 25 percent of the earnings. 100% of the proceeds raised by CNHBC will be used towards local community projects! The 26th Annual Seacoast Bike Tour
Saturday, May 14th and Sunday, May 15th/Portsmouth, NH
Breathe New Hampshire has been improving lung health in the state since 1916. One or two day options from Portsmouth, NH to Ogunquit, ME. Early Bird registration fee is $40 until Dec. 31 (get a free pair of biking socks just for being an “early bird”!). $45 registration fee thereafter. Rhino Bike Works - Grand Tour
Sunday, May 15/7am/Rhino Bike Works/1 Foster Street, Plymouth, NH
The famous "grand tour" is on Sunday, May 15th. This is a 120 mile ride that begins at Rhino Bike Works in Plymouth, NH. You will be riding to North Woodstock, and then over the Kanc, Bear Notch, Crawford and Franconia. For a shorter ride (80ish miles), you can meet the group in North Woodstock behind Truants Tavern. Green Commute Week
Monday, May 16th to 20th/Statewide Promotion
Commute Green New Hampshire is a statewide promotion. Its primary goal is to encourage individuals to use commuting options, such as carpooling, bicycling, walking, using public transportation and telecommuting. The promotion challenges people to track their commuting activities during the week of Monday, May 16 through Friday, May 20, 2011. After the results are tallied, top achievers in a variety of categories will be recognized. For more information, click here
Lake Sunapee Bike Race

The 38th Annual bike race is once again being held at Mt. Sunapee Ski Resort. The length of the race varies on category, from 23, 46 or 69 miles. Race with other cyclists around Sunapee lake! Pre-registration only at bikereg.com (register by May 19th).
Crank the Kanc

A time trial up the Kancamangus highway??? Ouch. Our legs hurt just thinking about it! But it is an adventure of a life, so register fast. Many of the fields are already full (there is a waiting list you can sign up for). All proceeds benefit the Kennett High School (just think, you can suffer and feel good about it)! Last year over 150 participants traveled the road to literacy and supported the Adult Learning Center Ride to Read Cycle Event …and walk. Cycle or walk the picturesque communities of southern NH. Feast on a hearty post event meal hosted by the Adult Learning Center. Rain or shine this event will be a great day. For the cyclist who does not want to participate in the 100 mile route; 50, 25 and 10 mile routes are available. Eastern States Cup Downhill Race (New Hampshire Championship) at Pats Peak
Saturday, June 11th to Sunday, June 12th/Pats Peak/Henniker, NH
Want to check out some fast bike racing? Visit Pats Peak on June 11th and 12th to watch the Eastern States Cup. The race at Pats Peak is the second race of the series, and the race will help decide the winner of the New Hampshire State Championship. Pats Peak Mountain Bike Festival

10th Annual Pats Peak Mountain Bike Festival - 3 Events, 1 Weekend - June 11 & 12, 2011! There are lots of options to choose from including 24.12.6 Hours of Pats Peak, Downhill Thrill & X-Country Challenge. The Bike Course is 5.2 miles in distance with 827 ft of vertical climb per lap. The weekend is filled with fun races for adults (all categories), and also includes live music, camping and kids races! For more information, click here
Try the Track - An Introduction to Track Cycling
Friday, June 10th to Saturday, June 11th/Northeast Velodrome/Londonerry, NH
The Northeast Velodrome & Cycling Park will will offer a “Try the Track” clinic, permitted through USA Cycling, on June 10 & 11, 2011. For anybody new to the sport or experienced, this is a great opportunity to increase your skills. The two part clinic will provide a thorough knowledge on Track Cycling, as well as on the bike coaching culminating in some basic racing. The goal of the clinic is to provide consistent information and material used at many of the country’s leading tracks to form an entry point for the budding track racer. The clinic is open to anyone, and one day licenses will be available to anyone who is not a licensed USAC (USA Cycling) rider. They have 30 track bikes available for demo if you do not have your own bike, but sizes are limited, so register to reserve. The clinic will be divided into two parts. A classroom session on Friday the 10th of June which will cover Track Bikes, Track Protocol and the Track racing surface itself. The second part of the clinic on Saturday the 11th of June will be an on-the-bike format where you will learn the nuances of the fixed gear bike, the subtleties of the track, riding in a group, and then racing. White Mountain Cycling Classic

The Second Annual White Mountain Cycling Classic is being held by New England Disabled Sports. Come bike around the beautiful White Mountain region for a circuit race. The length of the race varies by category. This is a wonderful event, and all proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. There will also be a handcycle and tandem races. 29th Annual Exeter Criterium
Tuesday, June 30, 2011/Exeter, NH
If you are in the area, the Exeter criterium is a fantastic race to watch (or race)! Downtown Exeter provides a fun and exciting venue to watch the race, and the race frequently attracts a number of pro racers who are in the area for the Fitchburg race (which occurs the following weekend). All proceeds benefit the Barrows/Bogart/Bemis Cycling Scholarship at the University of New Hampshire. For more information, click here.
JULY 2011
Saturday, July 2, 2011/Londonderry, NH
Not sure what you want to do for Fourth of July weekend? Come race at the velodrome in Londonderry! There is $1999 in prizes, and the categories are Men's Category 4, Women Open and Pro 1/2/3. If you haven't raced at the track, you still have plenty of time to come check it out. There are races every week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays. There is also a structured training program for just $5 on Saturday mornings from 9-11 a.m. (if you don't have a track bike, you can rent a brand new Fuji for just $15 for the day). Friday, July 8th to Saturday, July 9th/Manchester to Hanover
Thirty years ago, four Cancer Center nurses rode 100 miles through New Hampshire’s White Mountains. They rode to honor their patient, Audrey Prouty and raised $4,000 for research at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center. For this year’s 30th Annual Prouty, 5,000 participants and 1,000 volunteers will come together in the Connecticut River Valley to pay tribute to the many, many people, like Audrey, who’ve battled cancer; and to continue the important work of bringing an end to cancer. Mt. Washington Century Ride
Saturday, July 16th/6-8am/Tin Mountain Nature Learning Center/Albany, NH
The Century ride around the base of Mt. Washington is via the NH Scenic Byway/Presidential Range Tour route that offers spectacular mountain views and tranquil New England pastoral scenery. The Century is completely supported with five aid stations along the 100-mile course (three on the 80-mile and two on the 40-mile), support vehicles with ham radio operators, two on-duty EMTs, and a bike repair support. This is a fundraiser for the Tin Mountain Conservation Center. For more information, click here
31st Annual International Century Weekend

The Granite State Wheelmen International Century continues! Many scenic and shorter rides will be available in addition to the “Classic” ride to Canada. Hampshire 100
Sunday, August 21st/Greenfield, NH
Test your skills and stamina at the fifth annual edition of this premier mountain bike race. The 100 kilometer (62+ mile) course will wind through the beautiful and varied terrain of Southern New Hampshire. The single loop course will give participants a good mix of mountain bike terrain. The first miles are open and fast, allowing lung and leg warm-up, and a stretching out of the field. Ample technicals and climbing follow in later miles. The current course is similar, but not identical, to the prior years' editions, as the trail boss always adds enhancements to the ride each year. Approximately 7,000 feet of climbing. Looking for a fun challenge? Try out "Crank the Crawford," an 18 mile time trial up Crawford Notch. This looks like a fun event sponsored by White Mountain Velo and Wildcat Ski Foundation. 38th Annual Tri-State Seacoast Century

Scenic rides along the seacoast of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. The sea breeze, hopefully the sun, the fall weather, the friends, limited hills and the bike make this century one of the best rides in America! The route is marked. Mountain Bike Biathlon

That is correct - you get to race your mountain bike and shoot a rifle! What could be more fun? A great event for all ability levels, and there will be instruction on use of rifles before the biathlon begins. If you don't have your own rifle, no worries -- the Pemi Valley Fish & Game has club rifles you can borrow. Just let them know ahead of time. But beware -- this is addictive. Train The Trainer - Safe Routes To School

NEMBAfest at Bear Brook State Park

The Kona Bicycles-Fox Shox Mountain Bike Adventure Series is a six-point charity mountain bike ride series that celebrates some of the best riding in New England. Going into its seventh year, the series provides riders from Maine to New York with opportunities to take part in recreational riding events along marked loops, raise money for various charities, and celebrate mountain biking with a post-ride party. Each event offers a chance for riders of all abilities –from hardcore experts to families with children-- to explore a new mountain bike destination and follow marked loops and take part in led rides.
